President Holbrook with Dan Work & Dr. McGee

The Ohio State University is home to many talented students. Here are some of the accomplishments from this past year.

This year looks like the best year yet for NSF graduate fellowships awarded to our students! NSF Fellowships were awarded to:

-Clair Nichols, who works with Dr. Foster

-Keith Coleman, who works with Dr. McGee

-Carol Shaffer, who works with Dr. Vershum

Also, three other students were listed as NSF Honorable Mention. They are:

-Dan Work, who works with Dr. McGee

-Jenna Brown, who works with Dr. Foster

David Varathungarajan, who works with Dr. Fox

Congratulations to Celeste Chavis, who was the only student in the College of Engineering who was selected into the John H. Glenn institute in Washington, D.C. Internship Program. She is only 1 of 12 students selected university-wide. Her internship in Washington began in the Spring of 2006. Celeste worked with Mr. McGee while at Ohio State.

Celeste was also selected for CONVERGE 2006, MIT's graduate preview weekend. Out of 60 applicants, only 26 were selected to visit MIT's campus on the Charles river in late September. MIT's goal is to have these students experience the full range of graduate student experience at MIT during the weekend.

Keith Coleman recieved the 2006 National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship. NDSEG is sponsored by the Department of Defense. Keith's appliaction was selected by the Pffice of Naval Research from nearly 3,600 applications that were recieved this past year.

PhD student Taehun Yoon, who works with Dr. Schenk, received the Z/I Imaging Scholarship from the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing

Li Zhang, who works with Dr. Merry, was awarded the 2006 NASA Earth Systems Science Graduate Student Fellowship. Li's proposal is titled, "Understanding Dynamic Processes of Water Quality in Lake Erie from MODIS Time-Series Data."

Jeremiah Glascock, who works with Dr. Li, had his proposal selected for a stipend-supported residency at NASA Glenn Reserach Center. The title of the proposal was, "Image-Based Lunar Navigation and Mapping Technology with Nagivation Beacon Support for the Creation of Excellence in Communication and Surveillience for Lunar and Planetary Exploration."

Tae-Suk Bae and Chang-Ki Hong, PhD students who work with Dr. Brzezinska, were winners of the 2006 Topcon Positioning Systems (TPS) Graduate Student Award. The two annual awards, sponsored by TPS, were established this year to recognize research achievements of the OSU Geodetic Science graduate students, given for "exceptional achievements in graduate research in the art and science of satellite navigation and geodetic surveying." Each student will recieve a $2000 cash prize and a certificate of achievement. Chang-Ki Hong was also won the 2006 American Association for Geodetic Surveying Graduate Fellowship Award.

At the GIS-T conference, two graduate students - Nora Csanyi, who works with Dr. Brzezinska, and Daoqin Tong, who works with Dr. Merry - won the best paper award. Nora Csanyi was also the recipient of the 2006 William A. Fischer Memorial Scholarship from the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.

Esteban Vasquez, who works with Dr. Brzeezinska, was selected for the 2005 Institute of Navigation (ION) Graduate Student Award, given annually for excellence in research in the art and science of navigation.
