2010 Civil Engineering PE Refresher Course
The Civil Engineering PE Refresher Course will meet each Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7:30-10:30 for eight sessions beginning the 26th of January. Registration is required and must be completed at least two weeks in advance of the section starting date. Payment or contract must accompany application to ensure enrollment. All checks or money orders should be payable to The Ohio State University. If enrollment does not meet the minimum required, the course will be cancelled and all money will be refunded.

First Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera Results
A 3-D DEM (digital elevation model) of the topography seen by the Apollo 16 astronauts, including South Ray crater, has been created by researchers at the Ohio State Mapping & GIS Lab as their first results from the new Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter camera (LROC).
The Lab's DEM is featured on the NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter website (http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/LRO/main/index.html) and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera website at http://lroc.sese.asu.edu/news/?archives/97-First-LROC-Stereo-Results.html.
The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter satellite, launched June 18 from the Kennedy Space Center, is the first mission in the United State's new Vision for Space Exploration program. The spacecraft will orbit the Moon for as many as five years taking images in search of valuable lunar resources and potential future landing sites.

Class of 2009 Photo
During an undergraduate student forum with the Chair this past year, the students expressed a desire to have a senior class picture in the same format as the historical class pictures that line the department hallways. The collage is in black and white with individual student photos showing a distinguished view of each person. A special thanks go to Timothy Sheldon, who was the photographer and prepared the Spring 2009 class collage. Plans are to continue this tradition for future classes.
Fox Receives the ASCE Thomas A. Middlebrooks Award
The Thomas A. Middlebrooks Award is made to the author or authors of a paper
published by the Society judged worthy of special commendation for its merit as a
contribution to geotechnical engineering. Papers written by young engineers are given
preference.
The 2009 Thomas A. Middlebrooks Award is presented to Patrick J. Fox, Ph.D., F.ASCE and Robert H. Kim for the
paper: “Effect of progressive failure on measured shear strength of geomembrane/GCL interface”, Journal of Geotechnical and
Geoenvironmental Engineering, 134(4).

Congratulations to JuWon Hwangbo
PhD Candidate JuWon Hwangbo has recently received 2 awards from ASPRS: the 2009 Intergraph Scholarship, and the 2009 BAE Systems Award for best student paper for "Integration of Orbital and Ground Image Networks for the Automation of Rover Localization". The awards were presented at the 75th annual ASPRS conference in March.
Civil Engineering Career Day
The Central Ohio Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), along with the Ohio State University and Ohio University, is sponsoring a Civil Engineering Career Day on Tuesday, April 21, 2009. The program is geared to high school juniors that are interested in a career in civil engineering.
Two tours are planned - one to the Huntington Park Baseball Stadium and another to the Main Street Bridge (3-span, inclined arch, 2 deck structure).
Students will be transported by bus to the different tours and lunch. There is no cost to the school or student. Students must arrange for their own transportation to and from OSU. Registration information can be obtained here.
Dr. Hojjat Adeli Honored!
Dr. Hojjat Adeli was recently named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for 2008. He was cited for his distinguished contributions to computational infrastructure engineering and worldwide leadership in computational science and engineering as a prolific author, keynote speaker and editor-in-chief of journals. Stander '40 Community Room Dedication
Dedication of the new Richard R. Stander ’40 Community Room (410 Hitchcock Hall) took place through the
gracious donation of Richard R. Stander, Sr. on August 21. Faculty, staff, family and friends were on hand for
the ribbon cutting ceremonies. Mr. Stander received his bachelor of civil engineering degree from The Ohio State
University in 1940.
Fox Receives Chandra S. Desai Excellent Contributions Medal
Dr. Patrick J. Fox, Professor of Geotechnical Engineering in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering & Geodetic Science, has received the Chandra S. Desai Excellent Contributions Medal for his theoretical and computational research on flow, transport and consolidation in porous media. The award is given by the International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics (IACMAG) every 4 years on a worldwide basis. Dr. Fox will receive the Excellent Contributions Medal at the 12th IACMAG Conference in Goa, India, on October 4, 2008.
USEPA C2P2 National Award for OSU Coal Combustion Products Research
The Ohio State University's research accomplishments and expertise on the beneficial utilization of Coal Combustion
Products (CCPs) have been recognized by the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA’s) Coal
Combustion Products Partnership (C2P2) with the 2008 award for research.
The C2P2 program is a cooperative effort of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, American Coal Ash Association, Utility Solid Waste Activities Group, US Department of Energy, US Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service, US Federal Highway Administration, and Electric Power Research Institute to help promote the beneficial use of CCPs and the environmental benefits that result from their use.
The award was presented by Susan P. Bodine, Assistant Administrator for USEPA's Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response, on July 2, 2008 at the 40th anniversary meeting of the American Coal Ash Association held in Washington, DC.
Receiving the award which recognizes nearly 20 years of CCP research and outreach at OSU, were Professor William E. Wolfe and Dr. Tarunjit S. Butalia of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science. The OSU CCP research and outreach efforts are sponsored by the Ohio Air Quality Development Authority's Coal Development Office along with other federal and state agencies, private industry, and trade associations.
International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) Award for Dr. Fox
Dr. Patrick J. Fox, Professor of Geotechnical Engineering in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering & Geodetic Science, has received the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) Award for his research contributions on the static and dynamic shear strength of geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs). The IGS Award is the highest research achievement award in geosynthetics and is given biennially on a worldwide basis to recognize outstanding research contributions to geosynthetics engineering during the four years prior to the award. Previous recipients of the award include faculty members from Drexel University, the University of Texas-Austin, and the University of Maryland. Dr. Fox will receive the IGS Award at the EuroGeo4 Conference in Edinburgh, Scotland, on September 9, 2008.
Carolyn Merry Elected as ASPRS Vice President
Reston, VA - 2 April 2008 Professor Carolyn Merry won the election to become ASPRS (American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) Vice President for 2008. She was inducted at the recent ASPRS Annual Conference held in Portland, Oregon, in late April. Once she is sworn in as President in 2010, Merry will be the eighth woman (five in the last six years) to hold that office since the Society was founded in 1934. ESRI First Place Award Goes to CEEGS Research Stafff
Dr. Ron Li and his research staff co-authors Kaichang Di, Jue Wang, Xutong Niu, Sagar Agarwal, Evgenia Brodyagina,
Eric Oberg and JuWon Hwangbo are the First Place recipients of the 2008 ESRI Award for Best Scientific Paper in
Geographic Information Systems for the paper "A WebGIS for Spatial Data Processing, Analysis, and Distribution
for the MER 2003 Mission". Presentation of the award certificate will take place during the ASPRS 2008 Annual
conference in Portland, OR. The paper was published in Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote
Sensing, 73(6): 671-680.
ASCE Awards High Honors to OSU Geotechnical Engineer
Columbus, April 30, 2008 – A professor of the geotechnical engineering program at The Ohio State University has
received a prestigious best paper award from the Geo-Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
Prof. Patrick Fox, a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science, will
receive the 2008 Thomas A. Middlebrooks Award for his published papers entitled "Coupled Large Strain Consolidation
and Solute Transport. I: Model Development" and Coupled Large Strain Consolidation and Solute Transport. II: Model
Verification and Simulation Results." These two papers were published in the Journal of Geotechnical and
Geoenvironmental Engineering, January 2007 issue. The Middlebrooks award is made to the author(s) of a paper
published by ASCE during a 12-month period that is judged worthy of special commendation for its merit as a contribution
to the field of geotechnical engineering. ASCE presents only one Middlebrooks Award annually.

T. H. Wu receives Peck Award from ASCE
We are extremely pleased to announce that Professor T.H. Wu is the 2008 recipient of the Ralph B. Peck Award from
the ASCE Geo-Institute. The Ralph B. Peck Award is presented for "outstanding contributions to the geotechnical
engineering professional through the publication of a thoughtful, carefully researched case history or histories, or
the publication of recommended practices or design methodologies based on the evaluation of case histories." The
award is named after Dr. Ralph B. Peck, formerly of the University of Illinois, who has served as the foremost leader
in geotechnical engineering over the past 50 years. Professor Wu was one of Dr. Peck's early Ph.D. students at UIUC.
T.H. Wu made a presentation of his work - Case History of an Embankment on Soft Ground - at the 2008 GeoCongress
that was held in New Orleans during March, 2007.
Historic Bridge Conference - A Big Success!
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science and the College Engineering hosted the 8th Historic Bridges Conference in Columbus, Ohio, on April 28-29, 2008. The conference provided a forum for the exchange of ideas between engineers and preservationists. A preliminary program is now available, including registration materials.

scientist in civil and environmental engineering and William Wolfe, a professor of civil and environmental
engineering, as well as representatives from the industry to make the experimental lot a reality.
